      <image:caption>A more inclusive sector will increase the pipeline of investible organisations, better enabling investors to deploy their capital. It is widely acknowledged and proven that “gender diversity in business increases diversity of thought, which leads to better decision” (Economist, September 30th, 2017). It therefore follows that increasing the diversity of the people who work in social investment, particularly those at investment committee and board level, will lead to better decision making and ultimately investments and investment returns for the funds that employ them. This in turn should lead to improved social impact, and results for the VCSE and beneficiaries that the funds serve.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>People working in social investment, particularly those with protected characteristics can benefit from investor diversity. Educating organisations of their obligations under the Equality Act and offering support with their recruitment, retention and promotion practices will reduce the instances of discrimination faced by those in the sector. It will also reduce the likelihood of people, particularly with protected characteristics, being deterred from applying or being unaware of the opportunities to work in this sector. Increasing the diversity of the workforce as a whole will also reduce the exclusion and outsider-ness that can be experienced when there is only minority representation.</image:caption>

Danyal is responsible for a £15m social investment fund for JRF, focused on achieving solutions to poverty and inequality in the UK. This followed 10 years at Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. Danyal was responsible for the social investment portfolio, following his earlier grant making role as Programme Director Environment. He worked for Charity Bank and in Brussels for INAISE, a network of social banks. His early career including working for the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance association (UKSIF), Aston Reinvestment Trust and the New Economics Foundation (NEF). He co-chairs the Social Investment Diversity Forum, and is on the organising committee of the Social Impact Investors Group. He sits on the Financial Inclusion Advisory Group and the Community Investment Steering Group. He is a board director of Environmental Finance, a former trustee of Ethical Investment Research Services (EIRIS) Ltd after 15 years service and is currently a trustee of School of T’ai Chi Chuan London.</image:caption>

Gemma began her career as a chartered accountant and has 15 years experience in finance across the private, public and social sectors. During her time at the Young Foundation, Gemma set up its flagship social incubator, the Young Academy, to support and invest in early stage ventures tackling education inequality. In 2015, she moved to Right to Succeed helping to build the charity.
